Marvin Tate

Spencer Hutchinson

5 Points Art Gallery & Studios extends its visual representation of Chicago artists from its This Is America group exhibition to Discarded, the two-person showcase of conceptual found-object assemblages by Marvin Tate and Spencer Hutchinson.  Discarded demonstrates the continual lifecycle of objects in the world as two Chicago-based artists, Marvin Tate and Spencer Hutchinson, execute masterful up-cycled assemblages from the tossed, lost, and gentrified rubbish saturating Chicago’s urban landscape.  As a self-taught artist, Tate recovers shoe insert refuse, coalescing them into bountiful displays, reminiscent of floral bouquets or Juju Hats, the costume headdresses of royal Cameroonian dancers. With a BFA from the Art Institute in Chicago, Hutchinson’s practice includes amassing remnant articles found at construction sites or abandoned along the streets and gutters of Chicago and embedding them into conceptual assemblages that force the viewer to interject meaning or deal with the lack thereof.  Come behold the impressive repurposing of life’s most mundane, ditched objects into spectacular visual compositions.

Discarded is on display until October 27, 2019.
