Gracing Milwaukee and 5 Points Art Gallery + Studios with a repeat visit, but now anchored in his own bold solo exhibition opening Friday, March 11, 2022, 6-9 p.m. (CST), Dave McClinton (Austin, TX) reminds the audience he is Determined to Resist.

Positioned somewhere between poised fortitude and defiant disregard, the subjects, with skin and ensembles rendered in layered 2-D textures, archival images, family photos, found imagery and self portraits, all serve the purpose of dignifying and “illustrating the life-cycle of a black person’s inner life” and reflecting upon “how the weight of American history can either crush you or harden you” (McClinton). Reclaiming the power of the gaze, the viewer is instantaneously enraptured and pulled into 12 commanding digital portraiture collages.

Combining his love of photography and graphic design, and believing “the economy of message can be applied to art” McClinton creates artwork that visually communicates and quickly disseminates facets of American history that has not been fully or accurately illustrated.

Determined to Resist remains on exhibit until Sunday, April 24, 2022. The artist talk occurs at 7 p.m. (CST) opening night, both, in-person and via the Zoom info provided below.
